Symonds was born in Yoxford, Suffolk. Best known as a portrait painter, he was working in London by 1881. However Symonds kept his Suffolk connections; in 1885 he was commissioned to paint Sir Richard Wallace (see:The Wallace Collection, London W.1) whose country house was Sudbourne Hall, Orford, Suffolk
It is unusual to come across more personal studies,like these, by Symonds
